Udaipur is also known as the "City of Palaces", a "Fairyland" and a "Vision in Dream". Udaipur is the city of sunrise. It is surrounded by hills, mountains, and its beautiful palaces are mirrored in the calm blue water of Lake Pichola.
The city has five magnificent palaces - City Palace, Jag Niwas, Jag Mandir, Laxmivilas and Monsoon Palace. The palaces exude with tales of heroism and valor of the Rajputs.

In the past, Udaipur was the capital of Mewar. Sishodiya Maharana Guhil founded Udaipur in 568AD and the Mewar dynasty is the oldest in the world, which has ruled for 76 generations.

After being defeated by Akbar, Maharana Uday Singh built the city on the banks of Pichola in 1569. Lake Pichola is located to the South West of the city and is surrounded by walls. Though the wall has been overlapped by the expansion of the city, nonetheless the ruins still remind visitors about the gallantry of the Ranas.
The houses and temples of the old city stretch out around the Lake Pichola in a pale honeycomb that makes Udaipur an oasis of colors in a stark and arid region like Rajasthan.

Lake Palace
Lake Palace or Jag Niwas was built in 1754 by Maharana Jagat Singh II who gave his name to this elegant white building. The Lake Palace Udaipur is a palace on an island in the middle of Lake Pichola girdled by hills, was the summer residence of the rulers of Mewar. Today this pleasure palace is a luxury hotel like none other in the world.

City Palace
The City Palace of Udaipur is one of the most remarkable constructions of the Rajput rulers of Rajasthan. Located in the heart of the city of Udaipur and towering over the Lake Pichola, the City Palace unfailingly infuses a sense of awe in the hearts of its onlookers. It is the standing testimony of Rajput passion for art and architecture despite the fact that the exterior is not as elegant as the interiors.
The original construction of the palace was pioneered by Maharana Udai Singh of the Sisodia clan soon after he founded the city of Udaipur
Lake Pichola
A man made lake, Lake Pichola is one of the prime attractions of Udaipur. The lake is known for the palace build amidst the lake. The lake was built by Maharana Udai Singh II. It was made basically for defence purpose. Cradled amongst hills, gardens, havelis, temples and ghats, Lake Pichola is the picturesque spotlight of Udaipur. The lake sports two islands palaces- Jagniwas (Lake Palace) and Jagmandir. The lake is about 4 km long and 3 km wide, and not much deep- it often dries up in times of severe summers.
The Lake Palace is a white beautiful palace, situated in the mid of the Lake Pichola. The palace was built by Maharaja Jagat Singh as his summer home.

Saheliyon ki Bari
Saheliyon Ki Bari is one the most beautiful gardens and a major tourist destination in Udaipur. The garden is famous for its lush green lawns, marble art and fountains. English translation of Saheliyon Ki Bari means "Garden of maids". This renowned garden is located on the banks of Fateh Sagar Lake, presenting a green retreat in the dry lands of Rajasthan. Garden of maids was built in the 18th century by Maharana Sangram Singh for the royal ladies.
As per the legends, the garden was designed by the king himself and he presented this garden to his queen. Actually, the Queen was accompanied by 48 maids in her marriage.
Jagdish Temple
Jagdish Temple is one of the famous temples of Udaipur. Located in the City Palace complex of Udaipur, this temple is made in the Indo-Aryan style of architecture. In 1651, Jagdish temple was built by Maharana Jagat Singh, who ruled Udaipur during 1628-53. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu (Laxmi Narayan), the preserver of the Universe. It is celebrated for being the largest temple in the city of Udaipur. The gateway of this temple can be sited at a distance of 150 meters from the Bara Pol of the City Palace.
This three-storied temple is a wonder of architecture that comprises beautifully carved pillars, decorated ceilings, painted walls and lush halls. In those times, 1.5 million rupees were spent to raise this structure.

Ahar
