Tal Chappar Sanctuary

During the month of September, the sanctuary comes alive with the chirping of various migratory birds including montagur's, marsh harrier, pale harrier, imperial eagle, tawny eagle, short toed eagle, sparrow hawk, skylark, crested lark, ring drove, brown dove, blue jay, green bee eaters, black ibis and demoiselle cranes.

The Tal Chappar sanctuary is situated in Sujangarh Tehsil of Churu zone which is placed in the North-East division of Rajasthan. In the outskirt of the Great Indian Thar Desert is nestled an unparalleled asylum of the most graceful Antelope like “The Black buck”. Tal Chappar sanctuary with virtually flat pathway and shallow lowland region possesses open air grassland in which the Acacia and prosopis trees are spread out. The wonderful topography gives it a visual aspect of a typical Savanna. The word “Tal” stands for plane land. The rain water flows through shallow low lying areas and accumulate in the diminutive seasonal water pools.

The Geology of the Tal Chappar Sanctuary is disguised by the excess wind blown out in the area. A few minuscule hummocks and queered rocks of slate are aligned with the western side of the sanctuary. Region between hillocks and the sanctuary comprises the landmark area of the sanctuary. The entire sanctuary gets swamped by water when it used to rain heavily. Tal Chappar Sanctuary is handled as per the provisions of sanctioned Management Plan.

The Tal Chappar Sanctuary was earlier used as a hunting reserve by the sovereigns of Bikaner . But after the species of Black Buck entered into the park, people have started calling it Black Buck Park. Black bucks are not only scarce but considered as the most beautiful and holy antelopes of the park.

Birds like Sparrow hawk, Ben harrier, Montague's harrier, imperial eagle, marsh harrier, pale harrier, tawny eagle, skylark, short toed eagle, sparrow hawk, ring drove, crested lark, brown dove, blue jay, black ibis, green bee eaters, demoiselle cranes, blue jays and cranes come to the sanctuary in winter season.
The ideal time to check out the amazing fauna of Tal Chappar sanctuary is from September to March.
